Online Rummy: How to play
Rummy is a popular card game in India that can be enjoyed by 2-8 players. Indian Rummy – an online version more widely played online – is considered a combination of 500 Rummy and Gin Rummy (with gin rummy being the more popular choice in the U.S).
Players match cards they are dealt based on rank or sequence. The game's goal is to build melds (either sets: three or four cards of the same rank; or runs: three or more cards of the same suit forming a sequence).
The player who discards all their cards first gets zero points and wins the round. While the game sounds complicated, playing rummy is very easy. Our Rummy Game Guide will tell you everything you need to know about how to play the game, the rules of the game, strategies, tips and tricks, and more.
Indian Rummy: Overview
Objective: The objective of the game is to be the first to discard all cards in your hand. You can do this by building melds, which are sets or runs of cards based on ranks or sequence. Players can build a set: three or four cards of the same rank, or a run: three or more cards of the same suit forming a numerical sequence.
How to win: First player to discard all their cards wins the round.

Indian Rummy: Rules
Indian Rummy is played with a single 52-card deck.
If there are more than six players, two 52-card decks are used.
Typically, every player at a 2- to 6-player table is dealt 13 cards at the start of the round.
However, in recent variations, only ten cards are dealt. For games with more than six players, each player is dealt only seven cards.
Game Start:
Wait until you’ve been dealt your whole hand (13, 10, or 7 cards, depending on the number of players). Then, check the cards you’ve been dealt.
Start your turn by drawing a card. You can pick a card from either the open deck, which is the Discard Pile, or the closed deck, which is the Draw Pile. Your choice will depend on the card you need to build a run or set.
Note: Remember that a set needs a minimum of three (3) cards of the same rank. A run needs a minimum of three (3) cards from the same suit following a numerical sequence.
Decide which card you don’t need in your hand. Place it in the open deck or Discard Pile. This ends your turn.
Play continues around the table, with players drawing and discarding cards to form runs or sets. In rummy, a run or a set is called a meld. The process of building a meld is called melding.
Keep drawing and discarding cards until all the cards in your hand can be arranged into runs or sets. Throw your last card in the Discard Pile to declare Rummy!
Tip: Pay attention to the cards your fellow players are discarding. You can use the process of elimination and probability to guess which cards in your hand can still be melded.
Once a player declares Rummy, they have to show the other players their completed sets and/or runs.
